The Volunteer Engagement Manager works cross-functionally to engage individuals and groups in meaningful volunteer opportunities that strengthen relationships with nonprofit partners, corporate partners, and the broader community. This role amplifies the UWMC mission and vision by connecting volunteers with experiences aligned to their interests and skills, while supporting engagement across assigned divisions, including retail and nonprofit divisions.
The Volunteer Engagement Manager leads volunteer relationship management, coordination, and overall experience, and is responsible for planning and executing volunteer and community engagement events. This role requires strong project management skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities while delivering high-quality experiences for volunteers and partners.
The ideal candidate is a collaborative, detail-oriented professional with strong relationship management and public speaking skills, who is comfortable representing United Way in the community. They are a proactive problem-solver who thrives in a fast-paced environment and are passionate about creating engaging experiences that inspire community involvement.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL DUTIES OF POSITION
- Lead execution of United Way of Midland County’s volunteer engagement strategy, aligning volunteerism with organizational priorities and community needs
- Lead strategy and execution for assigned corporate and community partnerships, including workplace campaigns, sponsorships, and year-round engagement (Retail & Nonprofit Divisions)
- Develop and implement customized engagement plans for assigned accounts, including fundraising, volunteerism, and donor network participation
- Identify and secure sponsorships and additional revenue opportunities through partner relationships
- Plan and execute volunteer and community events from concept through completion, including logistics, coordination, on-site management, and post-event follow-up and reporting
- Coordinate and manage volunteer opportunities, including recruitment, placement, communication, and overall experience for individuals and groups
- Identify and develop new volunteer opportunities across UWMC partners and the broader community
- Track and report on volunteer data, including opportunities, participation, and hours, ensuring accuracy within digital systems
- Create, manage, and maintain volunteer opportunities and connections within digital platforms, ensuring data integrity and user experience
- Promote and provide training on digital volunteer management tools for nonprofit partners
- Lead UWMC signature volunteer initiatives and support broader engagement events as needed
- Collaborate with the Community Engagement Manager to design and implement engagement opportunities that align with corporate partner goals and donor engagement strategies [HM1]
- Work closely with the Corporate Volunteer Manager assigned to Dow to collaborate on filling and managing volunteer opportunities
- Support donor network engagement efforts, including Young Leaders United, by connecting members to meaningful volunteer experiences
- Support corporate volunteer engagement by connecting partners to meaningful opportunities aligned with their corporate responsibility goals
- Represent United Way in the community by attending meetings, events, and media opportunities to promote volunteerism and recruit participants
- Ensure compliance with all volunteer-related requirements, including waivers, permissions, data privacy, and safety protocols
- Support and participate in volunteer activities alongside participants to ensure a high-quality experience for coordinated volunteer events
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously, maintaining strong attention to detail and organization
- Other duties as assigned
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Education and/or Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., Public Relations, Communications, Social Sciences, Nonprofit Administration) or equivalent combination of education and experience
- 4+ years of experience in volunteer engagement, community engagement, nonprofit, or related field
- Experience managing volunteer programs, events, or community initiatives preferred
Qualifications
- Strong relationship management skills with the ability to build and maintain partnerships across corporate, nonprofit, and community stakeholders
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including confidence in public speaking and presenting to groups of varying sizes
- Demonstrated project management skills, with the ability to plan, prioritize, and manage multiple initiatives simultaneously
- Experience planning and executing small- and large-scale events with strong attention to detail
- Ability to coordinate and manage volunteers, both individually and in group settings
- Proficiency in using data to inform decisions and measure outcomes
- Experience with CRM systems and digital volunteer management tools, including data entry, reporting, and analysis
- Highly collaborative, with the ability to work effectively across teams and departments
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in a fast-paced environment

- Requires extensive periods of time at a computer.
- Light work that may include lifting or moving objects up to 20+ pounds.
- Operating office equipment such as telephone, printer, laptop computer, copier and fax machine.
- Remaining in a stationary position, often standing, or sitting for prolonged periods.
- Work outside of standard business hours, along with local travel is sometimes required.
- Required to attend community events and activities related to United Way’s goals.

Minimum Salary Statement: All the roles within UWMC have pay ranges that commensurate with the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the successful candidate. The minimum salary for this position is $35,000.
